101 - The Crawling Eye

First Broadcast - 11 am Saturday, Nov 18 1989 (Unconfirmed)

Amazing Colossal Grade?
Glenn looks concerned, he's just making sure that wasn't one of his own eyes crawling around down there.
Movie Pain: Low - Cheesy 50's creature feature goes down easy
Riffing: Some chuckles among many dead zones
Skits: Chuckle-Fest

"F-Troops" Forrest Tucker, headless mountain climbers, and a cute psycho...uh psychic square off against giant-killer eyeballs

There's lots of smoking and drinking found in this film which is the "officially sanctioned" start to the show. While not an awe-inspiring beginning (there are many missed riff opportunities: Such as the lack of commentary on the mountain climbers' phone, which looks strangely similar to a giant 'Kit-Kat' bar) The Eye has its moments.

Joel and the bots performing "Whole Lotta Love" on the Electric Bag-Pipes during the invention exchange is as funny as anything done in the series. And then there's the discovery that Larry wears high heels as part of a disguise when he sneaks into Deep 13! lol

The jokes roll out at a slower pace than in later seasons, but that doesn't mean there aren't significant jabs -"Get me 6 bags of onions and a giant eye chart!" - Joel. Plus we get to hear Servo's excellent 'Rain Man' imitation, which makes Joel chuckle.

Host Segments
Invention: Joel demonstrates the Electric Bagpipes. Dr. F injects Dr. Erhardt with canine antiperspirant. Segment 1: Joel explains why it's bad for a human to lose their heads. Segment 2: Gypsy uncoils herself. Segment 3: Why giant eyes are scary. End: Good thing/Bad thing. No Stinger -but If I chose one? The climber at the beginning screams... "His head - It was torn off!"

Stuff & Nonsense

* The "Crawling Eye" began life as a popular BBC television serial that was titled, "The Trollenberg Terror"

* During the final host segment, Crow's ram chip falls from his mouth and he makes a coughing sound. Later, when Joel asks Gypsy a math question, it looks like Crow is whispering the answer "Richard Basehart" to her

Skit Riff Explained
"Hey, don't open that door McGee!" - Crow
Crow is referencing the old-time radio comedy, "Fibber McGee and Molly". One running gag on the show was Fibbers over-stuffed storage closet. Whenever he'd attempt to retrieve something from storage, Molly would issue a warning and then you'd hear the resounding crash of items that spilled from the closet and onto Fibber.

The responses in the roll call are as follows...
Robot Roll Call: All right, let's go!
Cambot: Pan left!
Gypsy: Hi, girl!
Tom Servo: What a cool guy!
Croooow: He's a wisecracker.

Released on DVD: Volume 17 & Lost and Found
