906 - The Space Children

With Short: Century 21 Calling
First Broadcast - 5 pm Saturday, June 13th 1998

Amazing Colossal Grade: Uncle Fester and Mr. Drysdale vs children under the influence of an alien blob - yay for fun!
Movie Pain: Medium - Dry "creepy kids" story
Riffing: Solid, good humor
Skits: Induced mostly smiles

Our Motion picture for the week is the dry tale of a space blob that uses children of Earth to sabotage a missile called the Thunderer. Amply stocked with several sitcom stars, like Russell Johnson (the Professor from Gilligan's Island) who plays a boozy jerk. The riffing doesn't always strike gold, but there are some really good quips about midway through the film. Crow, in particular, was shooting rockets. Those gags where he gives voice to the alien sent me to the moon.

And finally, we get a short during the sci-fi era. "Century 21" is set during the Seattle World's Fair. In it, a young couple run over the aged in their zeal to understand phones. It was soo sweet to have a short again (our last was way back in episode 702) and the guys get in several zingers-Crow sings a line from a "Hole" song... "Someday you will ache like I ache"- Ha, Ha. Despite a few spots where Mike and the bots say 'nothing', I'm happy to have it.

Not a masterpiece experiment, but a goodie. the movie was one I watched in my youth and enjoyed, plus my nieces, who my wife and I would babysit on Sundays, remember this fondly. So it earns brownie points for kindling happy thoughts and making new fans.

Host Segments
Intro: Servo's kissing booth. Segment 1: Pearl installs a new phone system. Segment 2: Mike acts like the kid in the short. Segment 3: M&TB's play with a model rocket, Pearl has a real rocket and plans to launch Bobo into space. Segment 4: Crow introduces the Jackie Coogan fashion line. End: The blob from the movie shows up on the SOL, and Pearl launches her rocket but Bobo misses the flight. Stinger: The Professor, dead.

Riff Explained
"Wow, there's a Silkie stuck in an oil slick" - Mike.
Silkies/Selkies or Sea Maidens are part of an Irish folk tale. It tells of the seal people, who can shed their sealskin and take human form. There is a movie based on this story called "The Secret Of Roan Inish"

"Quick, say a prayer to St. Blaise!" - Servo.
Martyred bishop of Sebaste. It is said that he once performed a miraculous cure on a boy who had a fishbone lodged in his throat. St. Blaise then is often turned to when one suffers from a throat ailment. Riff is said when Bud's dad loses his voice.

Stuff and Nonsense
* Baby you're a rich man... Bud Brewster was played by Michel Ray (born Michel de Carvalho), who retired from acting after performing in the movie, Lawrence of Arabia (Space Children was his 2nd to last film appearance). "Bud" was on the UK's Olympic ski team, married into the "Heineken" family and later inherited the company. This space child is now worth billions.

* This was the final film role for child actress Sandy Descher. She played 12-year-old Eadie and is best known to sci-fi/horror fans as the catatonic child in the film "Them!"
