K21 - The Legend of Dinosaurs

First Broadcast - 6 pm Sunday, May 28 1989

Sandy Frank presents a Japanese version of "Jaws", with a dinosaur. The gang are riffing at a quicker rate and though there are a few unfunny puns (many about corn) and lots of off pitch singing... the SOL crew also provide a generous helping of huge laughs as well; "It takes a big man to floss a whole mountain" - Joel.

While it might not be the popular opinion, I really, really enjoy Josh's Servo. I like how he'd have Tom shift away from mocker to commentator; as when one character decides the Dinosaur theory is stupid and offers that it's probably a big snake killing everything -as if that's a more comforting idea. Tom, annoyed, observes... "I don't know why a giant snake is any less terrifying!" LMAO, so true.

Other highlights: Servo does an excellent "Rain Man" imitation and quotes from "Raising Arizona" - The guys mistake a child on a woman's back for a growth needing a lancing and we hear our first "Huzzah"! Of Note:  Joel cracks up after flubbing a line. In the film, two characters argue after one attempts to empty the other's air tank. After a slap, Joel quips... "Finish the job man - open the tanks". Hodgson breaks down and explains... "I meant open the -laughs- tanks", which is a repeat of the flub so who knows what he was supposed to say

Host Segments
Intro: The Mads develop a marketing scheme based on the Beatles "Paul is Dead" rumors and look for evidence that "Joel is Dead". Joel asks if this doesn't make them feel bad inside, Dr.F & Larry respond, "We always feel bad inside" - "We just write it off as gas". Segment 1: Joel demonstrates a special effect: A giant boy attacks! (I assume this is special guest Ralph Smith - But was Ralph a fan, friend, or family to a crew member? I asked Josh but he didn't know, and Phantom Engineer at the MST boards questioned Kevin Murphy who didn't have an answer either. Ralph, if you're out there, contact us). Segment 2: It's the SOL as a sitcom, complete with bad jokes and a laugh track. Segment 3: Joel gives more lessons on movie magic using a fire-breathing T-Rex model. End: J&TB's talk about what they're going to do during the summer. No Stinger: But if I chose one - Geologist drives off as smart mouth dude gestures and says... "Today's hero seeks adventure"

Crow's report -"The weather today-muggy, tomorrow-tuggy, followed by wuggy and thuggy"- sounds like nonsense but it's part of an old comedy routine. John Lennon used it - before him, comic Henry Morgan delivered the line. And it was also said on "I Love Lucy" and was treated as an old joke there. (Special thanks to Merlin for clarifying this riffs origin)

K20 - The Last Chase

First Broadcast - 6 pm Sunday, May 21 1989

One of KTMA's finest. The movie tells of a future where gas-powered automobiles are outlawed. So Lee Majors & Chris Makepeace race off to California in a fast car, with Jet pilot Burgess Meredith hot on their trail. This was a silly, fun, watchable flick that took a lot of good hits early on, especially from Servo. I enjoyed his riff... "Thank you dragon bitch", to which Joel admonishes (while trying to stifle a laugh) "I don't ever want to hear you say that again" and Tom innocently counters, "What, dragon?" Joel shows a good mind for classic Green Bay Packers (Tho he calls Willy Wood, "Woody Wood"). The only question left unanswered: What is a Chicken Party?

Intro: Dr. F. conducts a cold fusion experiment, in Larry's mouth! We then move right to the doorway sequence without going to the SOL first. Segment 1: The Bots get a humanity lesson. Segment 2: The 1,000th fan club member is announced. Segment 3: Joel presents a poorly spelled letter from Bobby Hodges, and Servo gets in a hilarious jab - "Bobby's a freshman at the University of Minnesota".  End: Joel reads a letter about someone named Commander Paul. No Stinger: But if I chose one - The bad guys listen in as JG talks to his plane like a woman then hoots n' hollers.

She is awarded a demon dog (as seen on TV) and Joel shows her how to wear it. I wonder where Gidget is today and if she still has her prize?

K19 - Hangar-18

First Broadcast - 6 pm Sunday, May 14 1989

Oh this would be a good msting candidate for season 8, just think of all the X-File & MIB jokes they could have done. While there are dead spots a-plenty in this episode, there are also a couple of real good quips from all 3 of our theater dwellers. "It's a surprisetory!" - Crow. As well as a few pop culture references - Such as Joel singing some Loudon Wainwright (Bell Bottom Pants), Tom quoting from the short-lived "Far Out Space Nuts" (I said lunch not launch), and Crow thinking he's spotted some Danish radio equipment from "Bang & Olafson" on the alien craft.

The host segments are all aces as well (Kibbles and Bots? LOL). Very solid effort, though they do drop the ball a few times (Darren McGavin stars, so where are the Kolchak riffs?)

Intro: Joel rubs his head, announces the name of the movie, and shouts, "Movie sign!" Segment 1: A Meteor shower is heading for the SOL and Crow bugs Joel with child-like questions. Segment 2: Crow's memory is purged, no more complete episodes of "Punky Brewster", No more "Lyle Wagner Penile Implant Show", no more "George Hamilton Skin Care Hour". Segment 3: Crow's first memory - Joel reveals that the golden bots name stands for "Cybernetic Remotely Operated Woman"... Just kidding. End: The fan club is near its 1,000th member. Joel announces that there's a surprise (A demon dog) waiting for that lucky fan whose #1,000. No Stinger: But if I chose one - Men in black scramble up a hill as an overdubbed voice says... "Come on, we gotta get that rock back!"

* I'm thrilled to see Darren McGavin on MST (like me he was born in Spokane, WA in the month of May). McGavin's best work can be seen in, "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" and as the father in "A Christmas Story".

* Devo hair? Joel makes this observation about all the perfect hairstyles in the movie. Though best known for the red flower pot hats - New Wave band "Devo", once wore plastic hair on an album cover and in videos.

K18 - The Million Eyes of Su-Muru

First Broadcast - 6 pm Sunday, May 7 1989

Su-Muru (Shirley Eaton of "Goldfinger" fame) and her army of female agents plan to take over the world, and only Frankie Avalon and the guy from Robot Monster can stop them. (The earth is doomed). Very funny at the start, though it slows down a hair when Servo leaves to bake brownies. Despite rough patches and a few cringe-worthy riffs (the slanted eyes line), this is one of my favorites from KTMA. MST is starting to show signs of its bright future; as the guys let loose with a vast array of pop culture references: From quoting an old ad ("Who's that behind those Foster Grants?") to the 70's series Kung Fu ("Take the pebble from my hand"). And where else in comedy will you hear a joke that refers to the '80s alternative rock band, the Dickies (Stuck in a Pagoda with "Trixie" (should be Trisha) Toyota).

Intro: The Mads discuss Joel's cheeks and introduce the movie. Segment 1: Joel gets back at the bots for locking him out of the ship last week. Gypsy is stuck in the "Spiral on down". Segment 2: J&TBs play a strange Courtroom/game show. Weird. Segment 3: Joel and the bots perform an acoustic version of the MST theme song. End: Servo's mouth is broken so Joel moves it for him. No Stinger: But if I chose one... Wilfred chortles over the chips joke. Then the camera zeroes in on Col. Matika, who chuckles as he says, "Chips"

K17 - Time of the Apes

First Broadcast - 6 pm Sunday, April 2 1989

Joel is floating naked in space, sooo It's just the bots running the show and they don't do a bad job. The season 3 version of this experiment is a classic that could never be matched, but it's fun to compare. For example: When Johnny cries that he doesn't want to be killed by a monkey - The response in 306 is, "I'd rather die at my own hand", in K17 crows says, "No, I'd rather be killed by a tiger". In episode 306, Pepe is said to look like an owl. In K17 Tom calls her raccoon boy and ferret face. When Col Sanders Ape demands that Johnny observe monkey-eating customs, in 306 Joel says "First regurgitate then eat", in K17 Josh retorts, "First scratch your armpit then pat your head and say Oooo-Oooo-Ooo".

In addition, there are tons of puns... Servo noting a grumpy character as having "A chimp on his shoulder", Crow singing "Take the ape train", and wondering if our heroes are eating "Ape Nuts" for breakfast. I also loved the conversation about the Oscars. Tom mentions that Apes was the only film nominated for best picture... and it still didn't win.

Intro: The Mads want Joel but the Bots are pretty evasive when it comes to revealing his where-a-bouts. Segment 1: The Bots search for Joel but can only find his jumpsuit. Segment 2: Crow and Servo discover that Joel's locked out of the ship and debate whether or not they should let him back on board. Segment 3: Cambot tricks Crow into thinking Joel's back on the SOL (using a clip from show K101: Invaders from the Deep). Servo gives a lesson on reality. End: Joel floats in space. The bots talk about life without him. No Stinger: But if I chose one... Johnny cries, "No, I don't want to be killed by a monkey!"

Riff Explained
While our trio is tied to a tree, and an ape threatens to club Johnny with the butt of his gun, Crow says... "Johnny, he's got your gun".  This probably references Dalton Trumbo's horrific novel, "Johnny Got His Gun" - Published in 1939, it tells of a soldier who has had his arms, legs, and face blown away and how he spends his days, trapped in a hospital bed, remembering his past. There is also an old song from 1880s titled Johnny Get Your Gun.

K16 - City On Fire

First Broadcast - 6 pm Sunday, March 19 1989

Henry Fonda -One of my all-time favorite actors- stars in this movie about an explosion at a refinery that sets the city ablaze. The Msting? Josh gets tickled about a guy who can stop, drop but fails to roll. Fonda asks for his son and Joel says, "Peter, we need the Easy Rider". Leslie Nielson is hosing down doctors, nurses, patients, and Joel observes that it's all... "part of the hospital hazing process". The guys also provide a sight gag, as fire approaches, they all jump. Crow is especially good, the majority of the big laughs I received sprung from his beak. Though Joel & Josh get in some nice shots as well.

Host Segments
Intro: The Mads might have their licenses revoked because they no longer qualify as mad scientists but rather "mildly peeved researchers". We also learn that they use to work as "Fruit Inspectors". From here we go right to the movie with no J&TBs and no doorway sequence. Segment 1: The bots pull a prank on Joel and make a lot of bad jokes. Segment 2: Joel demonstrates "Hell in a Handbag". A funny skit and the bag was used again as Joel's invention in show #103. Segment 3: Joel is a drill instructor and leads the bots in a marching song. End: Gypsy's been working on the newsletter and Joel shows us all the cool stuff we'd get if we join the fan club. No Stinger: But if I chose one - Drunk anchorwoman says to gassy looking Producer... "Ah-Ha, you put on a dress and do it"

K15 - Superdome

First Broadcast - 6 pm Sunday, March 12 1989

Another made-for-TV movie that stars the likes of David Jansen, Donna Mills, Tom Selleck and tells the tale of an attempt to fix the Super Bowl. Crow does his David Jansen and that's kind of funny, as is Tom's bad imitation of Kate Hepburn from "On Golden Pond". Some of the word plays and puns are a hoot - but there are frequent chasms of silence where the slow weight of the movie overwhelms.

The host segments parody those infamous "clip shows" - though only two are actual re-runs (something similar will be done later in #209 "Hellcats"). The funniest bit has Joel acting the tyrant, using Gypsy as an ashtray.

Intro: Servo types a letter with his feet and remembers the time he talked the Mads into bringing the crew back to earth... then Crow blew the deal. Segment 1: A flashback to K13 where Joel gives Servo a shock. Segment 2: Joel's an angry taskmaster ("I'm not really this way", explains Joel, "It's just Servo's perception of me"). Crow & Gyspy do Casablanca. Segment 3: Servo's favorite moments. End: Fan art and Joel shows off cool fan club items. No Stinger: But if I chose one - David Jansen speeds off in his golf cart, beeping at fans walking through the stadium halls.

It seems all she had was the final host segment -which featured her artwork- and was looking for a cleaner copy. This set the board a buzz because that final host segment has been missing since MST-time began. K14 - Mighty Jack

First Broadcast - 6 pm Sunday, Feb 26 1989

Illustrates perfectly just how good this show got by season 3. The best lines from episode 314 are gone and replaced, often, by silence. You get a few scattered chuckles, and this version doesn't have the bad edits so you can follow the story better. Still, unlike KTMA's version of "Gamera vs Gaos" where we get a pretty funny running gag about GrandpaCow mooing, this experiment doesn't offer up anything noteworthy or different to distinguish it. Stick with season three's Mighty Jack, K14's for the die-hard curious only.

Of Note:  During the first theater segment, Joel announces that there will be a newsletter published in 2 weeks. Sampo wrote in his episode guide notes at Satellite News, that Crow mentions the name Frank Conniff (He notes his resemblance to the reporter in the film).

Intro: Larry wonders if he and Clay are actually "Mad" or just angry. Dr F plays with a Mr. Potato Head. Segment 1: The Bots have welded themselves together, but Joel doesn't think it's funny. They return in women's clothing, "Now that's funny!" shouts Joel. Segment 2: Crow and Servo watch "Punky Brewster" and contemplate the nature of humor. Segment 3: Crow's bowling, Joel wants to play murderball but the Bots refuse. End: Viewer mail is read. One heaps praise on Servo "Must be a typo" says Mr. T Robot. While another loves Crow. A third letter includes a photo of AMY: The Magnificent Pagan She-Beast. No Stinger: But if I chose one... Atari turns towards Jerry; who looks away sheepishly, like a guilty lover.

Josh is referring to a bit from Joel's stand-up act where he used candy wrappers and silly string to make a 'floor of a theater' costume. This bit will show up in show #212, Godzilla vs Megalon.

K13 - SST Deathflight

First Broadcast - 6 pm Sunday, Feb 19 1989

This one is considered by many the best offering from KTMA. BUT, all the while I'm watching it I'm thinking, "Oh, what they could have done with this in season 4" There are soooo many shots they could have, but didn't, take. And with actors like Robert Reed, Burt Convey, Misty Rowe, Doug McClure, George Maharis, Burgess Meredith, Tina Louise, Martin Milner & Regis Philbin, man it should have been like shooting fish in a barrel. In addition, the Host Segments didn't do a whole lot for me - that limbo skit, in particular, was random and throw-away.

There were a handful of chuckles in the theater and I did enjoy the one skit with Gypsy's new voice (the perplexed look Joel wears is great). But all in all, I was less than thrilled - Deathflight never reaches those purported comedy heights for me.

Intro: Dr. F returns from Vegas bearing gifts and bucket fulls of cash. Joel does a spit take. Segment 1: Joel gives Servo a shock. Segment 2: Gypsy has a cold and treats Joel to her Marilyn Monroe impression. Segment 3: Servo sings while the SOL crew does the limbo. End: Viewer mail is read for the very first time, Servo invites all to write in with their favorite pizza toppings. No Stinger: But if I chose one - Bubble's shrieks... "Don't say that word!"

K12 - Fugitive Alien

First Broadcast - 6 pm Sunday, Feb 5 1989

Sandy Frank strikes again! This time bringing us a cheapo space epic. Trace is gone so no Crow (and Servo takes his seat again). There are a few good riffs, but generally, there's too much bad singing and smoking riffs that fall flat. Though I found the "Life Cereal" exchange at the end to be cute, "Let's get Rocky, he'll try anyone".

The episode also reveals a few secrets: We discover that Clay is accidentally dating a man and that Gypsy might be a drug dealer (Servo says she sold him some 'space speed') lol, it's only a joke. Also: this might be the first time the "Spiral On Down" is mentioned since the pilot (there are 3 eps yet to be seen). Joel is looking for Crow and Tom says... "he's on the spiral-on-down wearing his Ray-bans". The SoD is how Joel gets to the theater. Gyps and Beeper took a walk through it in K00. Gypsy got stuck in it in show K18 and in "Ring of Terror" the bots trick Joel into jumping through its hatch. 

Host Segments
Intro: Dr. F is in Vegas so Larry is in charge. Joel sings the "Fugitive Alien" theme and his voice hurts Servo's spine. Segment 1: Joel grills Servo on Crow's whereabouts. When Tom won't tell, Joel threatens to give him a voice like Punky Brewster. Just then Gypsy walks in with Crow's head in her mouth. Segment 2: Joel and Servo discuss why certain celebrities are never seen together (They might be the same person: I.E. Fred Flintstone and Tip O'Neal). Segment 3: The crew has a dance contest which Gypsy wins. End: Joel gives us the address to join the new fan club, Servo asks that you include the name of your favorite soup. No Stinger: But if I choose one... At the end with Ken swinging his arms and yelling, "AIEE, AIEE, AIEE, EYAA!"

This is an altered version of an old Clairol ad, which showed a man and woman running towards each other in slo-mo

K11 - Humanoid Woman

First Broadcast - 6 pm Sunday, Jan 29 1989

Saucer-eyed alien clone with GI Joe hair, seeks earthling's help in saving her dying planet. I liked the Humanoid Woman, the way she walked over grass and jumped on chairs and turned invisible and dodged bullets. I liked the boxy robot who could suck a watermelon through its bottom and had to hold onto its head so it wouldn't fall off (Both big-time missed opportunities). And I thought Josh got off some nice riffs, as in a scene when a woman tells the pilot to "Get a hold of yourself" and Tom responds... "How can I steer the ship then?" I wish this would have received the msting treatment in the sci-fi era as this surreal movie would have fit in quite well then.
